It allows you to develop knowledge and skills, which may play a part in your career-planning decisions. Typically, you will: be offered training and may be assigned a mentor or buddy work on a specific area of work or assigned to a project work for between 6-12 weeks be encouraged to reflect and record your experience. Most large graduate employers have an internship programme aimed at second, third or penultimate-year students. This forms part of their graduate recruitment strategy – impressing on an internship can lead to a job offer after graduation. For internships taking place the following summer, deadlines for internship applications with some of the major graduate employers can be as early as November. If you miss these deadlines, there will be other internship and work experience opportunities advertised throughout the year. Internships can be a great way to build professional experience, gain insight into a particular sector and develop your skillset. Not all companies and roles will offer internships, so it is important to consider all of the ways you can develop your work experience.
