Careers for Social Good (8 - 12 February 2027)

Monday 8 - Friday 12 February 2027

We know that many of our students and graduates are interested in career opportunities where they feel they can make a positive impact on society. Students most often look to public and third sector organisations to provide these kind of values-led career paths.

We want to shine a light on some of the options that students who are motivated by the idea of Careers for Social Good might like to consider. The aim is for students to hear from and engage with people from these organisations who can provide insight, inspiration and advice.

Why should I get involved?

Because you care about supporting new and diverse talent to contribute to social good. You want to help students explore their options.

You might want to get involved because you are keen to share your personal advice and experience or because your organisation is keen to attract students.  The campaign isn’t designed to be about direct recruitment but of course we welcome participation from organisations who are actively recruiting.

A very well coordinated event with an excellent format for providing advice and insights to engaged students.

Which students will engage?

Students from any subject background and at any stage in their course will be encouraged to engage.  We would expect it to be most popular with undergraduates from year 2 onwards, and would expect most interest from students in our College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

We encourage students to use this as a chance to be curious and discover what’s out there – that means some students may be at earlier stages of exploring career options and others may have clearer plans.

We are proud to have a very diverse student population – around half of our students come from outside the UK – naturally they are keen to hear from the industry about their chances of working in the UK and have questions about visas.

How do I get involved?

There are 4 main ways for you to get involved - be part of our networking event, pop up on campus on a Careers & Coffee stand, advertise and tag your upcoming events and opportunities with EdCareersforSocialGood, or write a guest piece for our Inform.ed blog. If you are interested in any of the options below, or would like to help us raise awareness of careers for social good in a different way please email us on employers@ed.ac.uk

We are looking for relevant industry professionals who would like to come onto campus to meet and engage with students.

The event will focus on encouraging relaxed, informal conversations that allow students to gain a deeper understanding of some of the options that are open to them and what kind of factors they might want to consider.

The final scope and format of this event will vary depending on the numbers of industry professionals/recruiters keen to support.

For now we are planning:

  • Meet People Working in the Third Sector in-person networking event on Wednesday 10 February, 6:10 - 8pm

Our Careers & Coffee stands are a great chance for individual employers to pop-up on campus to talk to students informally about your sector, your organisation and your roles.

A typically high-footfall space in the foyer of the Main Library on central campus will be made available to you. From this position you can attract the attention of students entering and exiting the library and offer some of those that you speak with a token for a free drink. The space includes a small table and there is space to bring your own small pull up banner.

These sessions are being offered to organisations whose purpose is directly related to improving social good on selected dates in February, please get in touch with us on employers@ed.ac.uk if you are interested to discuss availability.

You can also get involved by simply letting us know about your current vacancies and any of your own events.  We can advertise them using EdCareersForSocialGood to incorporate them into the campaign. We will be encouraging students to use this tag to search for relevant opportunities and events.

Either add EdCareersForSocialGood to your event or job description yourself when you list it on MyCareerHub, or let us know you want to be part of the campaign and we'll add it for you.

A great way to provide some content for the campaign is to write a guest piece for our Inform.ed Blog.  This might be a good option if you are interested in being part of the campaign but aren't able to participate in one of our events.  We'd be looking for someone from your organisation to write something that gives our readers an insight into your career path, your sector or type of role.

Take a look at our blog to get a feel for the content we publish and let us know what you'd like to write about on employers@ed.ac.uk
