We support all matriculated students at University of Edinburgh and graduates for approximately two years after the end of your course.

To get the most from your time with us, we ask you to make use of our comprehensive range of online resources before booking an appointment or coming to drop-in. If you are ready for an in-depth conversation, need more help preparing for applications and interviews, or have a specific question, there are lots of ways you can connect with our team.

Need feedback on a CV or application?

Before seeking feedback, you should work through our guides on writing your CV and cover letter. This will ensure you have developed your application to a high standard and it is ready for feedback. You can use our CV feedback tool, CareerSet, to get instant feedback.

There is no right way to write a CV. A strong CV is one that is easy to read, clearly structured and tailored to the organisation and role you are applying to. Our simple three-step guide will ensure your CV is as effective as it can be for your next application. We also have advice on writing your cover letter, personal statements and completing application forms.

Ways to get feedback

There are lots of ways we can help provide feedback. You can use CareerSet any time day or night to get instant feedback on your CV or cover letter. If you'd like to get feedback from an adviser, you can come to one of our daily drop-in sessions or book a quick query appointment.


Need guidance or support with planning your career?

Feeling overwhelmed about careers? Or have some ideas where you want to go, but aren’t sure how to get there? An in-depth consultation with a Careers Consultant can help you grow in career confidence and feel ready to take action. Some of the topics these appointments can be used for include:

  • Explore career options and help make decisions.
  • Identify your skills and strengths, motivations and values and how these influence career planning
  • Discuss how to gain experience to progress career plans
  • Review job search, application or interview approaches and discuss strategies to improve performance
  • Discuss the impact of a disability or health concern on career planning.

Whatever stage you’re at, we’re here to support you – both in-person and online.

We offer a large number of 30-minute appointments each week to give you practical, tailored support. At peak times, demand can be extremely high, so we encourage you to be flexible with appointment times and types. 

Preparing for an interview?

Effective preparation is key to succeeding at a job or further study interview and there are lots of things you can do to prepare. We have information and advice on what to do before and after your interview, how to practise for selection tests and what to do to prepare for an assessment centre.

Ways to practise and prepare

There are lots of ways we can help you practise and prepare. You can use Graduates First at any time to try our mock video interviews or practise common selection tests. If you'd like to practise with and get feedback from an adviser, you can book a Practice Interview appointment.
