Socio-economic factors and Widening Participation

We know that some students are disadvantaged by how the labour market operates, for example not all students have extensive professional networks or are able to access a wide variety of extracurricular activities.

While all of our services seek to support any of our students and graduates regardless of background, we know that students from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds may benefit from additional support to progress.

Employers are increasingly working to diversify their graduate recruitment, and we work with them to support this. Some examples of the actions employers have taken include, no longer taking school qualifications into account, or by moving to a strengths-based approach to recruitment which emphasises skills and potential, reducing biases linked to background or education.

Making connections

Networking can feel like a buzz word but it is just about being curious, having conversations and being curious. Our resources will help you understand how you can develop your networking skills and use them in your career planning.

Develop your network

Insights Programme

Our Insights Programme is for students in their second year of undergraduate study to develop the confidence, skills and connections to consider a range of careers through introductions to graduates of Edinburgh working in an exciting range of sectors, environments and local, national and global locations.

Insights is for students from a widening participation background. If eligible to apply, you will receive an email in Semester 1 from the Insights Programme Team.
