Technical information about this website’s accessibility The University of Edinburgh is committed to making its websites and applications accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018. This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below. Disproportionate burden We are not currently claiming that any accessibility problems would be a disproportionate burden to fix. Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations We are not currently claiming that there is any content outwith the scope of the accessibility regulations. What we’re doing to improve accessibility We will continue to address the accessibility issues highlighted, working with the software supplier, Abintegro, to deliver a solution or suitable workaround. Unless specified otherwise, a complete solution or significant improvement will be in place for those items within our control by December 2022. After discussion with Abintegro they have stated their commitment to accessibility through the accessibility widget and looking to make coding improvement to the actual site for new aspects. The University has raised their concerns about this approach and continues to push for a more accessible system without the reliance on an external widget. We will continue to liaise with Abintegro and monitor the situation to push for accessibility improvements. Whilst we are in the process of resolving these accessibility issues, or where we are unable, we will ensure reasonable adjustments are in place to make sure no user is disadvantaged. As changes are made, we will continue to review and retest the accessibility of this application. Preparation of this accessibility statement This statement was prepared on 9th February 2022. It was last reviewed on 22nd November 2022. This application was tested by the University of Edinburgh’s Disability Information team in February 2022, using the Internet Explorer (19041.1052) alongside Mozilla Firefox (78.11.0esr), Microsoft Edge (91.0.864.59) and Google Chrome (91.0.4471.124) browsers. Internet Explorer is still commonly used by disabled people, due to its accessibility features and compatibility with assistive technology, as shown in a UK government survey: UK Government Assistive Technology Browser Survey. However, a more recent world-wide usage level survey suggests the other three browsers are used more widely. In particular, when using a combination of different screen readers and browsers, Chrome has increased in popularity, and is now the favoured one in overall use: WebAIM: Screen Reader User Survey 2021 We tested: Spellcheck functionality; Scaling using different resolutions and reflow; Options to customise the interface (magnification, font, background colour et. cetera); Keyboard navigation and keyboard traps; Data validation; Warning of links opening in a new tab or window; Information conveyed in colour or sound only; Flashing, moving or scrolling text; Operability if JavaScript is disabled; Use with screen reading software (for example, JAWS); Assistive software (TextHelp Read and Write, Windows Magnifer, ZoomText, Dragon NaturallySpeaking, TalkBack and VoiceOver); Tooltips and text alternatives for any non-text content; Time limits; Compatibility with mobile accessibility functionality (Android and iOS). This accessibility statement is a live document, providing an open account of our current position and it was last modified on the date provided above. We are continually improving the user experience for everyone, and applying the relevant accessibility standards. Abintegro takes the following measures to ensure accessibility of this website: Include accessibility throughout our internal policies Assign clear accessibility targets and responsibilities Employ formal accessibility quality assurance methods Our resources are designed and developed in accordance with the internationally recognised Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA (https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG21/https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG21). Click here to view our accessibility certificate document verifying that this website has been externally tested and remediated to meet the WCAG 2.1 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1) AA level. As part of our ongoing accessibility programme we have implemented a specific Accessibility Tools Service, which can be activated on any page of this website by clicking on the "Accessibility tools" icon in located on the website’s top right navigation. The Accessibility Service provides easy access to all accessibility options, and is a key part of our accessibility programme that we are undertaking with a third party company (EqualWeb) that specialises in accessibility, to ensure as many people as possible are able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to: change colours, contrast levels, line / word spacing and fonts zoom in up to 200% without loss of content or functionality navigate most of the website using just a keyboard or numeric keys navigate most of the website using speech recognition software (in supported web browsers) listen to most of the website using a screen reader describe words selected by the mouse type words with a mouse via a virtual keyboard AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability. BBC My Web My Way provides more information on how to change your browser settings in Windows, Mac and Linux. Because additional content can be uploaded to this website the above may only apply to the user interface of this website itself rather than any content that has been uploaded to it by University of Edinburgh. How accessible this website is This website has been externally tested and remediated to meet the WCAG 2.1 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1) AA level. However, despite our efforts to make this website accessible to as many people as possible and compliant with relevant accessibility standards, we know there are some isolated limitations: We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible: A very small number of images may not have appropriate alternative text, however we do not rely on images to convey essential information and we do regularly review, and update, any images that are missing alternative text Some recorded videos and audio do not have the required caption controls, or transcriptions available (please refer to the “Disproportionate burden” section below) Most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software (please refer to the “Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations” section below) Please contact us if you observe an issue not listed. The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons. Disproportionate burden Third-party content: This career development website has the capability for University of Edinburgh to publish its own content on the website, for example on custom web pages. We therefore cannot, despite our efforts to make this content accessible, ensure this content adheres to all accessibility standards. This would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations. Examples of content that could be non-compliant include: images without alternative text, pre-recorded videos without captions, audio files without transcripts and downloadable documents not fully accessible to screen reader software. Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations PDFs and other documents Some of our older PDFs and Word documents do not meet accessibility standards - for example, they may not be structured so they’re accessible to a screen reader. This does not meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.2. The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. For example, we do not plan to fix any templates or isolated content articles that represent a non-essential part of the website. All new PDFs or Word documents we publish after 03 December 2019 will meet accessibility standards. Recorded video & audio A small proportion of our recorded videos and audio files do not have captions. From 23 September 2020 all recorded videos and audio files, produced by us and made available via the website will be captioned. Compatible with browsers and assistive technologies This website is designed to be compatible with the following technologies: The latest version of modern web browsers (specifically Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge) JAWS and NVDA assistive technologies for Windows and MAC This website’s accessibility is not fully compliant with Internet Explorer (all versions) and some older versions of Chrome, Safari and Firefox. Where possible we recommend using the latest version of modern web browsers. Technical specifications Accessibility of this website relies on our Accessibility Service feature and the following technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WAI-ARIA, in addition to any assistive technologies or plugins installed on your computer. These technologies are relied upon for conformance with the accessibility standards used.
