Career Mentoring Programme Vision 2020

The Career Mentoring Programme aims to enlist the warmth and willingness of our wider community to help graduates from the Class of 2020 flourish. The support of a mentor will be even more vital during the current pandemic, which is having a significant impact on our final year Undergraduates and their career plans. You can boost our graduates' confidence, help them recognise their skills and attributes, and support them along their career path at a key stage in their lives.

As a mentor, you will meet and develop a professional relationship with one of our recent graduates, offering your own experiences and expertise and drawing on your knowledge to help encourage their development. This is an amazing opportunity to support a new graduate and introduce them to the importance of building a professional network, to help them with that all-important first step into their future.

The programme is:

  • Flexible - Rolling start dates and online delivery allow this relationship to fit around your existing schedule and commitments. If you can’t start as a mentor right now, there will be opportunities to support our graduates at other points throughout the year.
  • Matched - We will match you with a mentee based on what you feel you can offer, and their career development goals.
  • Supported - The programme team is on hand throughout to help you make the most of the relationship and development opportunity.

Your Mentoring Journey

To get started, email and register your interest.

Email: CareerMentoring@ed.ac.uk

From here, we’ll be in touch and support you through the stages of the programme. As a mentor, you will:

  • Create or update your profile on Platform One, an online community for University of Edinburgh students, staff and alumni to network and share knowledge. The more detail in your profile the better – this is what we will use to match you with our graduates.

       Platform One

  • Read and follow best practice guidance provided by the programme team
  • Be matched with a suitable mentee. Once the match is agreed, you will contact your mentee directly to arrange your first meeting
  • Meet with your mentee (online or by telephone) at least once per month during the 6-month programme

The programme team will:

  • Provide you with support and guidance and ensure a suitable match with a recent graduate
  • Regularly check in to help you make the most of the relationship. We will also ask that you provide some feedback on your experience and keep in touch to let us know how the relationship is progressing
  • Following completion, support to reflect on the experience and hopefully stay involved to support another graduate
